UNIDROIT to establish its first Asia-Pacific Liaison Office in Hong Kong in 2026

We are pleased to announce that, on 11 December 2025, the UNIDROIT General Assembly, at its 85th session, authorised the establishment of an Asia-Pacific Liaison Office in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR) in 2026. The new Liaison Office, as UNIDROIT’s first overseas and regional presence outside of its seat in Rome, would serve as a focal point for enhanced engagement with Member States and other governments and stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region and would play a crucial role in supporting the organisation’s legislative, implementation and institutional work in the region. The opening of the Liaison Office in UNIDROIT’s Centenary year will turn a new chapter for the organisation; it will serve as an important channel for expanding UNIDROIT’s global presence, which would be crucial for the organisation’s future development.

UNIDROIT expresses its gratitude to the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the HKSAR for their generous contribution towards the establishment of the Liaison Office. Strategically located in Hong Kong, a renowned international legal, trade and financial hub and the host of many international and regional organisations, the Liaison Office will be able to significantly benefit from closer cooperation with other important partner organisations and to create a robust stakeholder network in support of UNIDROIT’s work. We look forward to the formalisation of all the necessary arrangements with a view to formally inaugurate the Liaison Office in the second half of 2026, as part of the UNIDROIT centenary celebrations.
