PRIVATE LAW AND AGRICULTURE WORKSTREAM

In 2010, acknowledging the importance of this particular sector, the Unidroit General Assembly decided to include aspects of the private law of agricultural development in the Work Programme of the Institute. Since then, Unidroit has developed a line of work specifically devoted to the crucial role private law can play in agricultural development.

The Private Law and Agriculture Workstream (PLA WS) covers some key instruments of the Institute, including the UNIDROIT/FAO/IFAD Legal Guide on Contract Farming; the UNIDROIT/IFAD Legal Guide on Agricultural Land Investment Contracts; the UNCITRAL–UNIDROIT Model Law on Warehouse Receipts; the Protocol to the Cape Town Convention on Matters Specific to Mining, Agriculture and Construction Equipment; as well as the ongoing UNIDROIT/FAO/IFAD Project on Collaborative Legal Structures for Agricultural Enterprises.

In addition to these projects, the Workstream is also conducting broader legal research on general issues concerning the implementation of private law in the agricultural sector with a view to identifying emerging challenges and explore future directions for Unidroit’s work in this vital field for development and food security.
