UNIDROIT Nordic Law Centre Seminar held in Rome

On 29 October 2025, UNIDROIT hosted a seminar on Cross-Border Assignment in Private International Law – Nordic Perspectives, organised by the UNIDROIT Nordic Law Centre, in Rome and online.

The seminar featured welcome remarks by UNIDROIT Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado, and presentations from Professor Giuditta Cordero-Moss (University of Oslo), Professor Joanna Lam (University of Copenhagen), and Dr Petr Bříza (Bríza & Trubač / Charles University)

The seminar focused on the third-party effects of assignments of claims in the context of conflict-of-laws standards. It began with an analysis of the long-debated European Commission’s proposal for a regulation, laying down conflict-of-laws rules on contractual aspects of assignments. The discussion then examined how cross-border assignments are currently handled in several Nordic countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, as well as in the Czech Republic, placing these experiences within a broader European context. The seminar also reflected on the lessons learned from the challenges encountered during the proposal’s negotiations and from the various Nordic approaches. It concluded by considering whether a streamlined and practical solution for the EU might still be achievable.

This seminar was organised as part of the activities as part of the activities of the recently founded Nordic Law Centre and was coordinated by Professor Giuditta Cordero-Moss and Ms Theodora Kostoula (UNIDROIT Legal Consultant). The Nordic Law Centre is a research centre hosted under the umbrella of the UNIDROIT Academy with the participation of institutions from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The Centre focuses on Nordic law and comparative law in relation to private law and Nordic law and supports research in these areas. It also seeks to increase international awareness of Nordic law and enhance the dissemination and knowledge of UNIDROIT’s work in the region.
