UNIDROIT participates in Italian–Norwegian Conference

On 22 October 2025, UNIDROIT participated in the IV Italian–Norwegian Conference, organised by the Italian Norwegian Research Institute for Law and Economics (INRILE) at Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome. The conference focused on “The Impact of EU Regulation on Models of Banking and Finance” and was chaired by Professors Mads Andenæs (University of Oslo) and Valerio Lemma (University G. Marconi of Rome), Directors of the INRILE.

During the conference, UNIDROIT Senior Legal Officer Ms Myrte Thijssen participated in Session II – News on the EU regulation for banking and finance and presented the UNIDROIT Legislative Guide on Bank Liquidation which was adopted in 2025. Ms. Thijssen outlined the Guide’s significance in supporting legislators and policymakers in designing effective bank liquidation regimes tailored to the specific features of non-systemic banks. Her presentation highlighted key elements of the instrument, including the proposed institutional design, liquidation tools, group dimensions, potential use of deposit insurance funding, and crucial aspects of the creditor hierarchy, including the ranking of deposits in liquidation proceedings.

The conference also provided an excellent opportunity to explore avenues of collaboration between INRILE and the UNIDROIT Nordic Law Centre, especially through joint events and research initiatives in areas of common interest. Ms Theodora Kostoula, UNIDROIT Legal Consultant and Coordinator of the Nordic Law Centre, held extensive discussions with the INRILE team, highlighting relevant UNIDROIT instruments and exchanging ideas for future joint initiatives. Building on these constructive exchanges, both sides expressed a strong interest in deepening their cooperation and identifying new opportunities for partnership moving forward.
