UNIDROIT provides assistance to Indonesia on the implementation of the Cape Town Convention and Aircraft Protocol at Judicial Workshop

On 7 October 2026, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) participated in a Legal Workshop in Jakarta organised by the Republic of Indonesia Ministry of Law. The event brought together approximately 100 participants, including representatives of the judiciary, including judges from first instance and appellate courts and the Supreme Court, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Law and other competent authorities.

During a session dedicated to International Cooperation in Civil and Commercial Matters, UNIDROIT Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson delivered an online presentation introducing the Cape Town Convention and its Aircraft Protocol, with reference to the core features, legal operation and economic benefits of the treaty system. Aviation Working Group (AWG) Secretary General Jeffrey Wool then provided an overview of pragmatic issues that has arisen in the relation to the operation of the Aircraft Protocol in Indonesia and how such issues could be addressed, including through the introduction of additional procedural laws. Finally, UNIDROIT Correspondent Professor Prita Amalia (Universitas Padjadjaran) discussed the interaction between the Aircraft Protocol and Indonesian national law. A robust question and answer session then allowed judicial participants to ask the panellists questions on various matters associated with the operation of the treaty system in Indonesia.

Indonesia acceded to the Cape Town Convention and Aircraft Protocol in 2007. Further information on the Aircraft Protocol is available at: https://www.unidroit.org/instruments/security-interests/aircraft-protocol/overview/
