UNIDROIT undertakes historic mission to New Zealand

Between 9 – 13 March 2026, a high-level delegation from the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) undertook a historic first mission to New Zealand with the objective of strengthening connections with the Pacific region. During the mission, Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado, Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano and Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson visited Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to engage with a range of stakeholders from government, private industry, the legal sector and academia. As a first UNIDROIT visit to the broader Pacific region outside Australia, the mission provided a gateway for UNIDROIT to promote its work in a region with few Member States and limited awareness of UNIDROIT’s work.

In Auckland, the UNIDROIT delegation delivered a guest seminar to the New Zealand chapter of the Banking & Financial Services Law Association (BFSLA) on UNIDROIT’s role in developing international legal instruments that harmonise secured transactions law in order to facilitate cross-border access to credit. The seminar surveyed existing access to credit instruments related to asset-based finance and leasing (the Cape Town Convention and its Protocols), receivables finance (the UNIDROIT Model Law on Factoring) and digital finance (the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law), as well as future UNIDROIT work on investment-based crowdfunding. The seminar was attended by representatives of top law firms, the major banks, the judiciary and academic experts. On 10 March, the UNIDROIT delegation delivered a seminar at the University of Auckland on “UNIDROIT and international commercial law: the case for legal harmonisation” and met with interested faculty to strengthen cooperation.

In Wellington, the UNIDROIT delegation met with senior government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Business , Innovation and Employment  to discuss New Zealand’s consideration and implementation of UNIDROIT instruments as well as potential methods of increasing engagement. The delegation also delivered a seminar at Victoria University Wellington in partnership with the International Law Association New Zealand Branch & New Zealand Association for Comparative Law. The seminar provided an opportunity for the UNIDROIT executive team to introduce UNIDROIT’s history and mandate and undertake a tour of its instruments in a diverse range of fields, including international commercial contracts, civil procedure, access to credit, and sustainable development. The seminar featured a keynote presentation by the UNIDROIT Secretary-General and comment by the Honourable David Goddard KC. While in Wellington, the delegation also took the opportunity to meet with faculty from the Victoria University law school. The flyer from the Wellington event is available here.

In Christchurch, the UNIDROIT delegation participated in the Christchurch Conference on International and Transnational Legal Frameworks 2026 (CCITLF 2026). With a theme of “Dispute Resolution and Private Law in an Interconnected World”, the conference provided a further opportunity for the UNIDROIT team to highlight a range of UNIDROIT instruments and how they could create cross-border harmonisation and economic benefits for the Pacific region.
