UNIDROIT Verified Carbon Credits project presented at 7th Mena Environmental Law and Policy Scholars’ Conference

On 10 February 2026, Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado delivered a Keynote Speech at the 7th Mena Environmental Law and Policy Scholars’ Conference organised by the Association of Environmental Law Lecturers in Middle East and North Africa Universities (ASSELMU) in Abu Dhabi. Professor Tirado’s keynote, entitled “Scaling voluntary carbon markets: the UNIDROIT project on verified carbon credits and private law”, opened Day 2 of the conference and was moderated by Dr Omar Khataibeh (ASSELMU Executive Council).

The Conference was co-organised with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) and was supported by the United Nations Environment Programme; Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD), ICELIS Global, and the UNESCO Chair on Environmental Law at Hamad bin Khalifa University (Doha, Qatar).

The conference brought together educators, university instructors, trainers, and practitioners with expertise in environmental law and policy, as well as computer and data science, with the goal of

fostering learning and collaboration in strengthening environmental law education and practice in the region, with a particular focus on the role of innovative technologies and digital tools, including artificial intelligence, in advancing sustainable development across the MENA region.
